What makes AMO distinctive
AMO has a few defining features that shape who it suits well:
- Wide grade range. It welcomes students from Grade 2 all the way to Grade 12, so a family can stay with one familiar contest as a child grows.
- Friendly, no-penalty format. Three short sections and no deduction for wrong answers make it approachable, especially as a first competition.
- Percentile benchmarking in English. Sitting in English against a global cohort gives an honest international reference point without travelling abroad.
- US Common Core framework. Questions align with a widely-used curriculum standard, so preparation reinforces mainstream maths skills.
How to think about choosing
Instead of chasing every competition, consider three questions:
Does the level fit my child today? Does the format encourage or discourage them? And does it reinforce skills that matter beyond the contest?
A contest that is well-matched in difficulty, encouraging in format, and aligned with solid fundamentals will do far more for a young mathematician than a long list of mismatched entries. For many families, AMO scores well on all three counts — particularly for students who are newer to competition maths or who value a friendly on-ramp.
