Primary (Grade 2–5)
At the primary level, AMO offers an encouraging first taste of competition mathematics. Questions focus on arithmetic, number sense and early problem-solving, framed to be approachable. The aim here is curiosity and confidence: young children discover that maths can be a puzzle to enjoy, not a test to fear.
Middle (Grade 6–8)
The middle-school papers introduce more advanced reasoning — ratios, geometry, and early algebra — that stretches students who are building toward senior-level mathematics. This is often where students who enjoyed the primary rounds start to develop real problem-solving strategy.
Senior (Grade 9–12)
At the senior level, AMO presents demanding problems across algebra, geometry, trigonometry and pre-calculus topics. For experienced students, this is a genuine international benchmark — a chance to measure their mathematical reasoning against capable peers worldwide.
Choosing the right level
The general rule is simple: a student sits the paper for their current grade. Because the format is friendly and the scoring carries no penalty, there is no need to push a child up a level prematurely — doing well and enjoying the experience at the right grade builds far more momentum than struggling a grade too high.

This site is the AMO (American Mathematics Olympiad) guide operated by Hanlin Education, an authorized registration partner for AMO. AMO is organized by SIMCC (Singapore) together with Southern Illinois University for grades 2–12, and is not the MAA’s American Mathematics Competitions (AMC). We help China-based families register the official way. Confirmed errors are corrected within 7 working days.
